The pattern calls for a medium-weight (worsted weight) yarn. I used Red Heart Soft (100 % acrylic, 204 yd [187 m], 4 oz [113 g], 1 skein #9941 Watercolors. For the 0-3 month size, you’ll need about 70 yards [65 m] in your favorite color.

Sizes and Finished Dimensions
Pattern is written for size 0-3 months, to fit 14″ [38 cm] head circumference. For 6-12 months and Toddler sizes, get the pdf instructions.
Materials
Worsted Weight Yarn: approximately 70 yds [65 m]
Size J [6 mm] crochet hook or size to obtain correct gauge
Gauge
Rnds 1-4 = 3″ [7.6 cm] diameter
14 sc = 4″ [10 cm]
Gauge always matters. To save time, take time to check gauge.

Instructions
Ch 4, join with slip st to form a ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 1, 6 sc in ring, join with a slip st to first sc.
Rnd 2: Ch 1 (does not count as a st), 2 sc in each sc around, join with slip st to first sc—12 sc.
Rnd 3: Rep Rnd 2—24 sc.
Rnd 4: Ch 1 loosely (does not count as a st), [X-inc] around, join with slip st to first dc—24 dc, 12 ch-1 spaces.
Rnd 5: Ch 1, sc in each dc and ch-1 space around, join-36 sc
Rnds 6-7: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join.
Rnd 8: Ch 1 loosely, *X-st, X-inc; rep from * around, join—36 dc, 9 ch-1 spaces.
Rnd 9: Ch 1, sc in each dc and ch-1 space around, join-45 sc.
Rnds 10-11: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join.
