Free Crochet Pattern: Granny Stripes Hat

Crochet cheerful rounds of granny-square style stripes with this free crochet pattern. It’s quick and easy enough for advanced beginners.

Stash bust to your heart’s delight! Worked in rounds from the top down, choose your colors as you go. Make it a wild riot of bright colors, or use more sedate analogous colors.

The Yarn

Craft Yarn Council icon 4- medium weight yarn

The yarn for this one is super easy! You can use a variety of worsted weight (medium weight) yarns. You’ll need about 185 yds [169 m] total yardage, in as many colors as you like, for the adult Medium size.


Granny Stripes Hat Pattern

The free pattern below is for the Adult Medium size, to fit a head circumference of 23″ [58.5 cm].

Hook

I used a size H-8 [5 mm] hook to get gauge with my collection of yarns. Use whatever size hook you need to match the pattern gauge.

Abbreviations

beg shell (beginning shell): standing dc, 2 dc) in one space
ch: chain
dc: double crochet
rep: repeat
rnd(s): round(s)
RS: right side
sc: single crochet
shell: 3 dc in one space
st(s): stitch(es)
standing dc: beginning with a slip knot on the hook, work a double crochet

Gauge

Rnds 1-3″ = 3 3/4″ [9.5 cm] diameter
4 shells = 4″ [10 cm] in pattern

To save time, take time to check gauge.

Pattern Notes

Work each round with a different color. Join all rounds with a slip st in the first st.
Leave at least a 4″ [10 cm] yarn tail at each end in order to have sufficient length to weave in.
Instructions in italics are explanatory notes.

Granny Stripes Hat Instructions

Crown

With first color, ch 4, join with slip st to form a ring, or begin with Magic Ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc in ring, [ch 1, 3 dc in ring] 3 times, ch 1, join with slip st to top
of beginning ch-3 — 4 shells, 4 ch-1 spaces. Fasten off.

Rnd 2: With next color, (standing dc, 5 dc) in any ch-1 space (counts as beg shell, shell), 2 shells
in next 3 ch-1 spaces, join — 8 shells. Fasten off.

From this point, “space” refers to the space between each 3-dc shell. It is not a chain-space.

Rnd 3: With next color, beg shell in first space (between double shells), 2 shells in next space,
[shell in next space, 2 shells in next space] 3 times, join — 12 shells. Fasten off.

Rnd 4: With next color, beg shell in any space, shell in each space around, join. Fasten off.

Rnd 5: With next color, beg shell in any space between shells, shell in next space, 2 shells in
next space, [shell in next 2 spaces, 2 shells in next space] around, join — 16 shells. Fasten off.

Rnd 6: With next color, beg shell in any space, shell in each space around, join. Fasten off.

Rnd 7: With next color, (beg shell, shell) in any space, [shell in next 2 spaces, 2 shells in next space] 3 times, shell in each space to end, join — 21 shells. Fasten off.

Rnd 8: With next color, beg shell in any space, shell in each space around, join. Fasten off.

Repeat last rnd until hat measures 7¾” [19.5 cm] from the top.

Next Rnd: With next color or color you want to use for edging, beg shell in any space, shell in each space around, join.

Edging

Rnds 1-2: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join.
Weave in ends.
