Free Crochet Pattern: Herringbone Stitch Crochet Washcloth

In this Herringbone Stitch Crochet Washcloth pattern, one simple change to the ordinary double crochet creates an entirely unexpected look. Left- and right-slanting stitches create a fabric with the just right combination of solid and drape. An oh-so-simple chain stitch edging completes the piece.

The easy-to-learn herringbone double crochet stitch pattern is a twist on the standard double crochet. If you can double crochet, you can crochet herringbone stitch!

In this sample I used KnitPicks/WeCrochet Dishie worsted weight (#4) yarn in color Blush. Dishie is 100% cotton, the perfect fiber for a washcloth. It comes in 100 gram balls of 190 yards [174 meters] each. The pattern calls for 90 yards [83 meters] of yarn, but keep in mind that if you don’t match the pattern gauge you may need more yarn.

I used size I-9 (5.5 mm) crochet hook. This stitch pattern shows up best with a solid color yarn, but you can certainly use a variegated colorway if that’s what you love.
